Why Do You Write?

I was asked yesterday why I love so much to write, and that got me thinking.  Sure I could say it is a cathartic release or even a way to expel all my pent up creative energy.   I love telling stories and weaving completely new worlds. But even though all that is true, I think the answer I gave her was the purest.

Every time I put pen to paper, I get to reinvent myself.  Each time I create a world and build the characters that will make it spin, every thread, every first kiss, every single word spoken . . . I get to live it.

Mind you, these lives we pour out on paper only exist in our creative minds, but building them is like living a total separate life for a few hours a day.

So tell me, why do you write?

  1. Because I spend too much time making up stories, and they really should go somewhere.

  3. I love living in my fantasy worlds, even for a short time. I write to get the stories out of my head.

    1. Problem is once you get one story out of your mind, another one pops up :)

  4. I often write to escape to a world where I want to be, rather than the one I am actually in. Same reason I read or watch movies. It's all about the escape.

    1. And escape you do. You create amazing new worlds with your stories, ones that I want to live in forever!

  5. I write because it's just what I've been doing for the last 28 years. Ever since I learnt how to write at 4 years old, one year after reading came full-blown, writing stories came naturally to me. It's like breathing.

  6. I write because I have to.

If I tried to keep these stories inside, I'd probably explode into a spray of crimson confetti. ;)

  7. I write because it's creative and artistic. But it's craft, too, which can be exhausting. It just feels so good when it's done and it's shining and it's mine. :-D

  8. I love your reason stated up there. :)

As for the question, my answer is - I write because I want to and I would be miserable if I couldn't. I know my characters are fictional, but maaan they feel real to me!

  9. Um...hello, my therapist told me too. It keeps the voices at bay. Seriously though, writing can be therapeutic. It's a wonderful release and I love creating new worlds, and new characters. And...and writing is a great way to meet new people like you and Mare. Good stuff.

  10. Because it gives me more opportunities to bother you:) JK. I write because I love it and I'm not sure what other horrible habits I'd pick up if I stopped.
